So is it that “confusing” about what Palm is doing with Garnet? Yes they sold the operating system by spinning off the OS development arm as PalmSource. Yes they’ve now licensed it back from Access, the Japanese company that purchased PalmSource in its entirety.
It seems to me that while Palm OS 5 (Garnet) is several years behind Windows Mobile or Symbian, the basic OS in the feature department, it still has great usefulness as a smart phone OS. The biggest thing is that the Treo platform with Palm OS 5 simply works, its tried & true. It also has a huge following and a very easy to use GUI.
Since the OS has been used for many versions of the Treo, the continual refinement of the user interface is where the product improvements will keep the OS fresh.

Ok, so the more I think about how best to leverage my meager personal computing budget for 2007, the more ideas I have. While having ideas and options is not a bad thing – I’m starting to wonder if my trusty Pocket PC is worth the price any longer.
More and more, I’m thinking about a UMPC – one with WiFi, Bluetooth and a decent performance level. All I need to do is have a real computer with me at all times, be able to play media (not create it), Internet access for writing & blogging, email and such. That’s it.
With that in mind, I’m starting to think that I don’t need as robust a phone as I have today. I’ve got several (dozen – shh…) software packages for my Pocket PC, but I find that I only use a few – and then only lightly.
I know I could move to a Smartphone like the T-Mobile Dash or Moto Q, but can I go lower than that? Can I go back to a plain old phone? One that has 3G data services for sure, but a simple phone none the less?
The reality is that I’ll never really make use of that awesome looking 17″ Quad Core killer 10lb. laptop that I would otherwise be dreaming about. A simple laptop or UMPC is more my style today – it would do everything that I need it to do.
I’m just curious what others are planning now that Vista is on its way to store shelves – what changes are in store for your mobile kit?

I can’t wait for OneNote 2007 – and the OneNote Mobile 2007 client that will come with the product. All during the beta of Office 2007, I’ve been using the mobile client with great success.
Its progressed from a rough form early on to a very usable tool as Kevin Tofel over at jkOnTheRun mentions. He also has a link to a Quick Start Guide for OneNote Mobile.
Check it out.

If you have been using Outlook Mobile Manager (OMM), you may be interested in knowing that Microsoft Research has released version 2.1 of this very useful tool.
OMM allows email delivered to your Outlook Inbox, to be forwarded to a mobile device, be it a cell phone, smartphone, or PDA Phone. The system learns what emails are important to forward, and which are not based on your actions. Omm can also forward appointment reminders in addition to emails.
Some new features in version 2.1:
- Supports POP3, in addition to Exchange email accounts.
- Enhanced support for native junk-email filters.
- Extended personalization to examples from arbitrary folders
- Multiple user-interface enhancements

Well, I’ve waited quite awhile to see a day like today. You couldn’t get away from it! Certainly, Cingular & Verizon have had days like this, but T-Mobile has always been treated like an also-ran when it comes to phones and service in the media.
But today was different – literally, everyone had coverage of the newly announced T-Mobile Dash Smartphone. And well they should – the Dash is everything the Moto Q was supposed to be. Affordable, usable, fast, compelling features, etc.
HTC, the company that makes the actual hardware, has a long history of building quality handsets running Windows Mobile Smartphone. The Dash is the latest variant of their capabilities.
So check out some of the following links for more information – pretty much everybody covered the news of the launch of the T-Mobile Dash today. One more thing to note – T-Mobile USA is the first division of T-Mobile International to get this phone. Usually one of the European arms in the UK or Germany gets the new phones first! Kind of interesting on that alone.
