The gloves are off

My blogging gloves that is. Its not that I’m going after anyone or anything in particular, but I’m going to be tackling more blogging content. I’m after expanding my writing and content creation skills in 2007 and I’ll be starting during the Christmas & New Years holiday break (I’m taking two weeks off of work).

Things to watch for in the coming weeks will be tweaks and improvements to my blog, with more opinion oriented comment on my favorite topics of blogging, technology, mobility, and leadership. The goal, quite frankly, is improving my marketability ending ultimately, in a career change sometime in 2007.

Frankly, the corporate technology environment that I’ve been working in has become way too stagnant, redundant, and predictable. I’m interested in finding more fast-moving, nimble solutions to the current problems that corporations are experiencing. This means more items along the line of “Enterprise 2.0” or enterprise solutions based off web-based, AJAX, centralized service-oriented software.

I’ve got to admit up front, that the company I work for (Michael Foods, Inc.) is a great place to work, really focusing on and supporting employees and their career development. This is one reason they have really smart, creative, go-getters working for them.

For me however, technology is no longer the end-all be-all thing it once was. Its still cool and fun to work with, but there are bigger challenges and more entertaining opportunities in other areas.

So that’s what I’m targeting in the coming weeks, a change from the casual blog that you’ve been reading to a more focused, more content-rich (dare I say professional) blog.  Have an opinion?  I’m interested in hearing it!

Missed a few days…

Sorry for that!  I got a little tied up at work and finishing the move, so I didn’t get a chance to blog for a few days.  I’m hoping to catch up a little this weekend.

James Kim

I’m saddened to hear the news of James Kim’s death.  While I didn’t know him, the outpouring of concern and hope around the blogosphere has been inspirational.  My condolences go out to his wife and children, who after enduring over a week in the cold, are now missing their husband and father.  CNET has a memoriam page dedicated to their Senior Editor that I recommend visiting if you have not heard the full story.

I’ve been following the saga of the Kim family for nearly a week.  Its hard to believe in this day and age that any of us can get so thoroughly lost.

The news of the rescue of Kati Kim and her children brings hope that the family will be reunited soon.  As of late afternoon, the rescue teams believe James Kim is still alive and that they are getting close.

For more detailed news CNET News.com has a roundup of stories from Dec. 5th surrounding the search.

Can a Windows user survive without Windows?

fedora core linux Alright, its that time of year again when I start wondering if I can make Linux box my main computer.  I’m going to try just that for the month of December, use Fedora Core 6 as my main OS, and try to stick to using all web-based tools for the majority of my needs.

I’ll admit to everyone right up front, I will keep my desktop system on Windows XP with Office 2003, mainly because I occasionally need Photoshop, Visio, and one or two other unique apps.  But I’ll try to do as much natively in Linux as possible.

I’ve a favor to those of you who are interested – can you give me suggestions on the following?  I’m looking for these tools on Linux to help ease my December sojourn into Linux.

  1. Blogging tool, similar to Windows Live Writer or w.Bloggar
  2. Graphics tool in place of Photoshop (yes I’ll be giving Gimp a go [again])
  3. Screen capture tool similar to Techsmith Snagit
  4. <more to come>

Any comments, suggestions, jeers or cheers can go in the comments.  I’ll be backing up my data from my Vista laptop, wiping the HDD, and installing FC6 this week.

Possible Mobile Quandary?

Ok, so the more I think about how best to leverage my meager personal computing budget for 2007, the more ideas I have. While having ideas and options is not a bad thing – I’m starting to wonder if my trusty Pocket PC is worth the price any longer.

More and more, I’m thinking about a UMPC – one with WiFi, Bluetooth and a decent performance level. All I need to do is have a real computer with me at all times, be able to play media (not create it), Internet access for writing & blogging, email and such. That’s it.

With that in mind, I’m starting to think that I don’t need as robust a phone as I have today. I’ve got several (dozen – shh…) software packages for my Pocket PC, but I find that I only use a few – and then only lightly.

I know I could move to a Smartphone like the T-Mobile Dash or Moto Q, but can I go lower than that? Can I go back to a plain old phone? One that has 3G data services for sure, but a simple phone none the less?

The reality is that I’ll never really make use of that awesome looking 17″ Quad Core killer 10lb. laptop that I would otherwise be dreaming about. A simple laptop or UMPC is more my style today – it would do everything that I need it to do.

I’m just curious what others are planning now that Vista is on its way to store shelves – what changes are in store for your mobile kit?
