Here is Paul Thurrott’s second installment in his Road to Gold series.
In the first part of the series, Paul talked about the 2001 to 2002 timeframe where Longhorn emerges from the secret corners of Microsoft engineers.
In part 2, 2003 is covered talking about leaked builds, the beginnings of delays, adding of features, troubles of WinFS, and more.
It really has been a long road to RTM for this Windows release and the more I think about it, the more I ask if current and past approaches to Windows (and Mac OS, and Linux) are valid any longer. With the potential of Web 2.0 coming to fruition by many, many new talented people – do we need a fat legacy client any more?
That said, Windows Vista is an impressive piece of code, and its history detailed in Paul’s articles are a fun read.

Charles Cooper, a Executive editor at CNET News.com, discusses an interesting point. One that I’ve seen as well: is Windows still relevant in today’s “web 2.0” centric world?
The answer, of course, is yes. Charles goes on to discuss a quick history of Windows’ “bundling”/anti-trust disputes. What I find interesting, or more correctly – frustrating, is the attitude with which many companies are taking. Charles talks about Symantec and Adobe trying to whip up sympathy in the European Union about Microsoft competing with them in their market.
The part that bothers me the most is that these companies, and others, fail to see that the product that was a lucrative niche market 10 years ago, is today’s commodity toaster. Since AV engines, and portable document formats are a commodity, the are to be expected in the base OS – a base service available at any moment to any requesting application.
These companies simply need to be more proactive, find that new niche. Look forward and discover those new business opportunities, and develop a business plan to exploit them. Simply relying on the old tried & true product song & dance.

Well, I’m trying to decide if I should go to the Windows Connections conference this fall. It’s in Vegas, and I’m not really enamored of the place (of course I’ve never been there yet).
Looks to be a good conference, as the Connections ones usually are, with a number of great speakers (Steve Riley, Mark Minasi, Sue Mosher, Tony Redmond, Paul Robichaux). I’ve always had a great time at previous Connecitons, and the quality of the information, sessions, speakers, content, and location have been excellent.
Its being held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, so check it out if you are interested.

Ok, so we’re exploring RIM’s BlackBerry solution at work, and I’ve been curious about how to integrate other platforms (I’m a Windows guy – remember?) and finally started digging this weekend. Aha! Here’s the link to BlackBerry Connect for Windows Mobile 🙂. Well. we will just be tucking that into our project folder for later reference, hehehe…
