Off to the Connections 2007 Conference

Windows Connections 2007 Well, I’ll be at the Connections 2007 conference next week.  Hosted by Microsoft, Windows IT Pro magazine and Tech Conferences, Connections is a great networking resource for Windows, Exchange and Office technology professionals.

This particular event is being held at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, FL.  Should be a good time, as well as a great event.  If you were interested in learning more about the conference, it’s three main focused specialities are Windows, Exchange, and Office.  There’s also a developer based conference held separately a week earlier.

I’ll be blogging the conference while there, and of course, Twittering about things all week.  All Twitters going should give a shout-out for a meetup at the conference one evening.

Going to Windows Connections – Spring 2007

I’ll be going to the Windows Connections conference in April, which looks to be an interesting session on Windows Vista, Office 2007, and Exchange 2007.  I’m also attending some SharePoint 2007 sessions that are being held pre & post conference.

It’s a 4-5 day conference, mainly for Information Technology professionals focusing on deploying technology within a corporate environment.  But even so, it can be a lot of fun – the speakers are some of the best on their topics.

It should be a pretty great time – let me know if you’ll be there!

Home Server & the Death of the Windows Drive Letters

HomeSRV.pngIt’s going to be very interesting to see how well the new Windows Home Server comes through for end users.  One very neat twist is the way Home Server is going to manage disk space.

No more drive letters for Home Server clients for one thing.  The new system will dynamically manage the drive space that is made available to the server and it’s clients.  That should make it very simple for end-users as they leverage the online storage and automated backup features of the new system.

Surviving without Windows – Day 20

So how have I been doing in my month-long quest to be Linux-only user for all December 2006?

Not as well as I had hoped.

Mainly its my fault for trying this in the wrong way. Instead of backing up my data, wiping my Windows partition and loading up Fedora Core 6 (FC6) like I had originally planed in early November. I simply installed FC6 in a VMWare instance on my Vista laptop. It works quite well all around, but it is not as “convenient” as it should be.

The fact that I’m already booted to my Vista desktop and then need to launch my FC6 virtual machine to do my work. Compounding this is my workload — at work. I’ve been so inundated by work that I have little time at home to get the things done that I had planned, so when Windows comes up, I plain forget to launch into FC6 to get my work done.

Now all this is all excuses and we all know it. So my revised plan is to do a little more learning in FC6 to get a better feel for the OS and to search out some of the tools I need in a Linux environment that I enjoy in Windows. Also, I’m going to revisit this trial in the New Year – probably February – and I’ll do it the right way by installing Linux on my hard drive, and put Windows in a virtual machine, so there!

Can a Windows user survive without Windows?

fedora core linux Alright, its that time of year again when I start wondering if I can make Linux box my main computer.  I’m going to try just that for the month of December, use Fedora Core 6 as my main OS, and try to stick to using all web-based tools for the majority of my needs.

I’ll admit to everyone right up front, I will keep my desktop system on Windows XP with Office 2003, mainly because I occasionally need Photoshop, Visio, and one or two other unique apps.  But I’ll try to do as much natively in Linux as possible.

I’ve a favor to those of you who are interested – can you give me suggestions on the following?  I’m looking for these tools on Linux to help ease my December sojourn into Linux.

  1. Blogging tool, similar to Windows Live Writer or w.Bloggar
  2. Graphics tool in place of Photoshop (yes I’ll be giving Gimp a go [again])
  3. Screen capture tool similar to Techsmith Snagit
  4. <more to come>

Any comments, suggestions, jeers or cheers can go in the comments.  I’ll be backing up my data from my Vista laptop, wiping the HDD, and installing FC6 this week.
