The discussion was fantastic in the depth of categories of technology covered. As usual, Bill Gates is a fascinating person with some great ideas of where technology is or should be going. Good stuff – and the best part being a short discussion of Bill’s fun with his Porsche 911 in Albuquerque in the late ’70s. 🙂 Also, if you haven’t seen Robert’s work at PodTech, you should check out his ScobleShow site – there is a lot of great information he’s got posted.
I’ve been heading in the direction of using a UMPC for a few weeks as I contemplate my next computer sometime this winter. Hugo Ortega of Uber Tablet has moved fully to a UMPC solution rather than a traditional laptop or Tablet PC.
I’m considering doing a similar thing, though I may end up getting a miniture Tablet PC rather than a UMPC – not sure on that. The performance of most currently shipping UMPCs concerns me, but it sounds like there are more options (including dual core) on the way for 2007.

So how have I been doing in my month-long quest to be Linux-only user for all December 2006?
Not as well as I had hoped.
Mainly its my fault for trying this in the wrong way. Instead of backing up my data, wiping my Windows partition and loading up Fedora Core 6 (FC6) like I had originally planed in early November. I simply installed FC6 in a VMWare instance on my Vista laptop. It works quite well all around, but it is not as “convenient” as it should be.
The fact that I’m already booted to my Vista desktop and then need to launch my FC6 virtual machine to do my work. Compounding this is my workload — at work. I’ve been so inundated by work that I have little time at home to get the things done that I had planned, so when Windows comes up, I plain forget to launch into FC6 to get my work done.
Now all this is all excuses and we all know it. So my revised plan is to do a little more learning in FC6 to get a better feel for the OS and to search out some of the tools I need in a Linux environment that I enjoy in Windows. Also, I’m going to revisit this trial in the New Year – probably February – and I’ll do it the right way by installing Linux on my hard drive, and put Windows in a virtual machine, so there!
As expected, T-Mobile today announced that their 3G UMTS rollout was already underway. With 50% of New York already completed, T-Mobile has obviously been active in the background working ahead of the spectrum acquisitions to get a jump on the 3G market.
With a completion schedule into 2009, and service to be available to customers next summer, the rollout is quite accelerated. BetaNews also mentioned the spokesperson changes, new plan options, and the UMA WiFi-based services announced late last month.
You may not know this but I’m a sledhead (snowmobiler). So I watched the 2007 model webcast for Polaris, and I have to admit that I’m a little disappointed. Last year I was eyeing up the 700 Classic, but it’s disappeared from the lineup for ’07. Instead, they’ve got the 600 HO IQ LX CFI for 2007. A great sled to be sure, but I was really impressed with last year’s model. Oh well, maybe one’ll turn up in decent condition this spring.

Yup, taxes are criminal and we need serious reforms. I've always said that if you want to see a tax revolt, make withholdings illegal and have Americans write a tax check every payday. They'll revolt for sure. You don't miss what you never had.
