The Power of Communities

Today we think of communities more as online constructs, usually referring to a social network as a community. Of course, a community isn’t a tool, but rather a collection of people with similar interest.

The reality is that we participate in multiple communities because of the varied interests we have and the need to connect. We are social creatures and connecting with like-minded peers brings a certain satisfaction to our lives.

This is where the future of communications and marketing come together. Building communities around a brand isn’t misguided as some may suggest. Brands have always had followers, they’ve usually been called loyal customers. These customers are the ones that evangelize at the drop of a hat, and rally around their favorite brand, be it an automobile, soda, or candy bar.

These brand-specific communities existed before social media, indeed, before the Internet itself was useful to the average consumer. So building on that existing base, and providing added value to your brand’s community is the job at hand with social media. The opportunity for your brand is to make it easier for the average consumer to become a loyal customer.

Discover how the power of community can enhance your products and strengthen your brand. After all, why produce and sell something if it isn’t worth people getting excited about it in the first place.

Learn From The Truth

Truth by slowdevil Sometimes its hard to listen to someone telling you the truth.  Deep down you know they’re right, and that’s why you don’t stop them in their tracks.  You know you need to hear it even though you don’t want to.  It’s good for you.

The reality is that we often need to have our perceptions reset, and that means we need to listen.  It also means that we need a network of closely trusted peers that can tell us we’re full of it, and be able to remain close because of it.  If you don’t have that kind of network, then you haven’t been working hard enough in your personal social networking efforts.

Learning that the great idea you have is crap, or simply needs a few easy tweaks is as important as the ideas themselves.  The ability to listen to people who care about your success and take that knowledge forward to make what you do better is a learned skill that true professionals embrace at every opportunity.

One of the things I learned from SXSW this past week was that I had been neglecting a portion of my network.  Many of the people I had connected with years ago, I hadn’t kept up with and my future has been impacted because of it.  That was my realization of truth, pointed out by a friend while in Austin.  It’s not a mistake I’ll make a second time.

Listening

Have you listened to yourself recently? Have you dug deep into what makes you, you and examined what you find? Did you like what you heard? Did it make you happy?

I want to hear new things.  I want to say new things in a new way that makes me think.  I want to believe that well thought out words can change hearts and lives.  Will you join me in the effort to listen for those words?

Learning to listen

communicating I’ll tell you one of the most important & introspective lessons I’m learning: it’s listening to what people say.  It’s a critical one that many of us find ourselves in the middle of when working on our personal improvement strategies.

While I’ve only really become aware of my own efforts to improve my listening abilities, I figured out that I’ve been subconsciously working on this for some time.  Don’t know exactly what triggered it to come to the surface, but it did – and makes a great deal of sense.

What’s also interesting to me is the effort involved in learning this skill.  It’s so at odds with how we’ve I’ve processed information when listening to others in the past.  To actually absorb the real meaning, the underlying urgency, the true understanding is what I’m after.  Whether it be a friend, coworker, or spouse it is crucial that we really understand what is being communicated.

It may be one of the most difficult things a person can undertake to improve their "soft" skills.  It also will go a long way to help you reach your goals.  Just like many other aspects of personal improvement, this skill is also critical to you if you’re working on your personal brand.

The ability to listen is a trait that people remember.  This is an important piece of your reputation and is part of what makes up your brand.  You want people to remember things about you, and having people remember that you listen to their requirements, listen to what’s important to them, listen to their concerns is a big one.

How else can we provide value to others when only a portion of what they’re talking about is listened to?
