I’m Back – Sort of

Hello!

Sorry for the lack of posts and information this past week.  I got the flu mid-week last week and have been pretty much offline since then.  I apologize for not posting, but this was the first time in more than a decade that I had the flu – usually I get just a simple cold over the winter.  Not this time.

Anyway, I’ll be trying to catch up or at least get a handle on what’s happing today.  Hopefully, I’ll get back in the groove quickly and get some reading started, and maybe some commentary.  Later!

Down and out with a cold

Sorry for not posting recently, workload and a cold have kept me from doing much online this week.  Possibly this weekend I’ll get back on track. 🙂

Music & the working “groove”

headphone Philips More and more lately I’m finding that I work better without distraction.  I know that’s kind of a Doh! idea, but I’ve been working for so many years allowing myself to be distracted and interrupted multiple times hourly (forget daily), to the point where its difficult to get back into the “groove” where your focus and attention is solely on what you are working on.

To combat this, I’ve started to listen to music while working on something at my desk.  I know there are many who do this already for the exact same purpose, and it seems to really help get a person back into their most productive working mode.

This past week, I have noticed how much more actual work I’ve gotten done when adding this to my work practices.  It also has brought home exactly how often I’m interrupted in my tasks.  There is a constant stream of people who are stopping by to ask questions – some that they should already know the answers too, but that’s another post – right?

I’ve found listening to tunes is most effective when working on scripts and documentation.  There is something about it that helps stimulate the brain to stream the ideas in a more logical, orderly sequence.  Strangely, it doesn’t seem to distract me from what I’m doing as I have long believed it would

So I’m really interested, how do you “drown out” the rest of the office to focus on your tasks?  What do you do to help foster creativity?

New theme and layout

Hi all!

If you’re reading this on the web, you’ve noticed a new look & feel for my blog here.  What I was going after was a cleaner “white space” look with a changing header graphic.

The new theme is “Water3” by The Undersigned which is a variation of his standard, dual column “Water” theme.  I’ve created some custom header graphic images from my own photo stocks (can you tell which ones are from my phone?) to cycle through, and will probably add/change them during the course of the year.

Hope this theme is easy to read, I really enjoy the cleaner appearance than the last theme.  The last theme was nice because of really good use of the screen space, the center column had a lot of space for text and graphics.

So, be patient with me as I’ve got a little bit of tweaking to do on the  CSS for bullets, and some script code to add for social networking links.  I’m also interested in opinions on the new look – let me know what you think!

Down with a cold

Man, I’ve not had a cold for quite some time.  I’m just getting over a doozie that’s had me knocked out for the last two days.  What a way to spend the first few days of Christmas vacation, huh?

But my plans for the next two weeks are the same, to do some work on the layout of the blog – one that is a bit easier to read, with less clutter.  So I’ve been sidelined for a few days, but I’m getting back on track, and once we’re through Christmas, we’ll be able to get some work done around here.

Thanks for stopping by, and Merry Christmas!
