The mobile news this week is fantastic! This time its about iMate and their new JAQ Pocket PC Phone that could be a Moto Q killer!
In a surprise move (at least to me), HTC is not building this device for iMate. It seems that iMate has contracted with another OEM to build a QVGA device with QWERTY keyboard, though instead of Microsoft Smartphone, it will run the Pocket PC variant of Windows Mobile.
The design is defiantly different from HTC designs (and Motorola’s Q), though it seems fairly well laid out. Oh, it does have a touch-screen by the way – in case you were interested.
Ah, another great phone is on its way to market – the i-mate Smartflip.รย The Wireless Report discusses what will be HTC’s first clamshell phone, and its a Smartphone based on Windows Mobile (naturally), and will inherit all the benefits of the Smartphone platform.
With EDGE support, a QVGA main screen, and a color external display – its shaping up to be quite a phone.
i-mate today released a ROM upgrade for their popular K-JAMPocket PC Phone running Windows Mobile, which includes the AKU2 “Push Email” upgrade! Available to i-mate customers through their Club i-Mate portal, the new ROM update allows for push email services through Microsoft’s Exchange 2003 with Service Pack 2 and advanced security options for corporate customers.
Some improvements are:
Microsoft Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) Allowing:
Direct Push email
Remote device wiping
Security policy enforcement
Global Address List Lookup (for customers using a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2)
Communication Manager has been updated to allow:
Current data services to be stopped
Direct Push email to be started/stopped using a single button press
iMate SP5/SP5m (Smartphone direct from iMate – Available now)
iMate K-JAM (PPC Phone direct from iMate – Available now)
iMate JASJAR (PPC Phone direct from iMate – Avaiable now)
Fantastic stuff! Many of these devices on are available direct on the internet from places like MadMonkeyBoy, Expansys, MobilePlanet and more. Watch the carriers for there releases over the next 2-3 months. Great time for Windows Mobile, especially if you are considering a change from RIM’s Blackberry!
