I’m not sure that I really trust HP to produce a good phone… why is that? I really enjoyed my HP iPaq h4155 a few years back, but everything since has been a disappointment. Please note that I haven’t bought an HP mobile device since the 4155, so my opinions are solely based on limited-time tests, betas, and technical specs.
Trusted Reviews has a one (a review that is) on the new Hewlett Packard iPAQ 514 Voice Messenger which they rate as 8 out of 10 on an average.
Though the screen is a bit low on the resolution side (176×220 – how old school), it is a full 2″ diagonal screen. Other features include a 1.3MP camera, WiFi, and Bluetooth. It does have a quad-band radio with EDGE support, 200MHz processor, standard 64/128MB RAM/ROM, and microSD slot.
It does run Windows Mobile 6, so its not likely to be behind the OS feature curve for some time, but for me, the low resolution, standard “candy bar” layout, and lack of a QWERTY input device means that it will not be on my list any time soon.

So Engadget Mobile is reporting that the HP iPaq hw6915 Windows Mobile based Pocket PC Phone is set to be launched on July 4th, 2006.
So what!?!
The device is way overdue, brings nothing new to the table, and is ridiculously overpriced. It just shows that HP had long ago lost the edge on Pocket PC design.
Priced at $890 (US), this low-resolution thumb cramper is probably going to be an easy pass by most smartphone shoppers this summer. Even with a processor upgrade over previous models and having WM5’s AKU2 incorporated in the device, there are more compelling designs available.
With smartphones like the Moto Q, Samsung’s SGH-i320, or the HTC Wizard based devices like the T-Mobile MDA or Cingular 8125, and their CDMA brother, the XV6700 available on both Sprint and Verizon.
You could compare the 6915 to the Palm Treo 700w in a number of ways, but even as a previous HP PPC owner, I’d throw down on the 700w. Or even the Treo 700p which has a stunning 360×360 screen, though it is a Palm OS device.
Anyway, I think there are many, many better choices than this overpriced device.

Over at Mobile Tech Review, they have a review of the HP iPaq hw6915 Mobile Messenger. Looks like a nice device, but the 240×240 resolution always throughs me off on these things. The new Treo 700p has a 360×360 resolution, too bad the Windows Mobile team didn’t see fit to work further on making the OS more resolution independent – maybe in the next version?

Another data-centric Windows Mobile 5 device is going to make its way into consumer’s hands. The HP iPaq hw6900! Fun times.
I’ve seriously got to investigate what will be the best device to purchase. Since I’m a T-Mobile customer, the upcoming MDA will probably be my choice – of course that’ll be dependent on pricing. Sometime soon!

It may be true – Brighthand has an article about the elusive new HP iPaq phone! Lets hope this is true, as the iPaq 6500/6900 follows the form factor of the Palm Treo line of PDA Phones, including a very useful QWERTY keyboard below the screen and many data-centric items.
