FCC Auction 66 ends, bringing in $13.7 Billion

So the latest FCC wireless auction ends after 28 days of intense bidding.  T-Mobile did well, gaining significantly needed spectrum across the country.

T-Mobile LogoT-Mobile USA Inc. was the big spender of the auction, winning 120 licenses with bids totaling nearly $4.2 billion. The fourth-largest U.S. carrier gained spectrum across the country, including licenses in the large markets of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. As soon as the auction closed, T-Mobile USA put out a statement saying that it will not immediately reveal its plans for the spectrum.

This is very exciting news for me as a T-Mobile subscriber.  While their EDGE data service is great, I can’t wait for 3G data speeds!

HTC Excalibur gets FCC nod – Engadget Mobile

Engadget has the good stuff today!

Check this out, the HTC Excalibur is being approved for distribution in the US. This QWERTY equipped Smartphone with landscape QVGA screen is built by HTC, the same company responsible for the HTC Wizard and other fantastic Pocket PC & Smartphone designs.

Rumored to be a Moto Q killer, the HTC Excalibur is a Microsoft Smartphone based device with the standard compliment of Bluetooth, WiFi, and GSM/GPRS/EDGE support. Look for this on the Cingular or T-Mobile networks, though there is no indication at this time as to which carrier will pick it up first. I hope both will snap this bad boy up ASAP!

US Spectrum Auction in 2006

An article over at Mobile Pipeline is reporting that there will be a ‘large-scale auction of wireless spectrum’ for the US mobile carriers to participate in. This will allow the carriers to expand both footprint, and bandwidth in thier ongoing “high-speed” data offerings. Personally, I believe this will prove to enhance the carriers ability to continue rolling out fast data services for reasonable prices.
