Yep, we’re starting to see more and more variations on social media meetups. This is a great thing for SMBers that can’t make it to a regular SMB because of work, distance, or other commitments.
Ruth Sylte has put together what looks to be a great meetup in Northfield, MN at The Contented Cow on August 24th. You can find more info here.
If you’re looking for another way to network with your fellow SMBers, this is a good one. So check it out and share the info with your social media friends.
Thanks for organizing this Ruth!

Social Media in real life
SMB-TC6 is coming together quickly and seems to have a theme: social media in real life! We’ve got many great things happening that really show how social media is changing everything we do. From writing books, to our political process, social media is transforming social interaction, bringing more interactivity and a voice to more people.
I didn’t plan on this, but as the event materialized, we ended up with a theme of sorts: social media in real life. The agenda is full of it – we’re writing a chapter of a book, we’re learning of new tools by their creators, we’re talking with citizen journalists at the kickoff of a major political conference… all these things are part of the lives of our community. We get to share these things, and make them even better. At least, that’s my thoughts as we finish pulling this together.
We have a very special event at this SMB: live-writing a chapter of Pioneer Press Journalist Julio Ojeda-Zapata’s new book Twitter Means Business – How microblogging can help or hurt your company. How will this work? We’ll be using Twitter of course! The project kicks off on Monday August 18th, 2008 and runs through Friday, August 22nd at SMB-TC6! More details on this from Julio (@jojeda) shortly!
Also, we have a new sponsor this month: MarketWire (thank them for the bacon ;).

The fourth SMB in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota is scheduled for Wednesday, June 11th. Sure, that’s tomorrow and I coulda/shoulda/woulda posted about it a week ago, but decided to let the posts here, here & here do their work.
We’re hosting the event at Concordia University in St. Paul for the second time, as the facilities work well for our group. Though I do believe there’ll be some suggestions to shake it up again in July.
I can’t wait to see what directions the conversation will go in this meetup tomorrow. There are always such great ideas that the group never has enough time to really cover them all. We’re lucky to have a bunch of outgoing people, ready to bring their opinions & perspectives to help others. It makes the meetups more valuable that way.
Agenda? Oh yeah, we’re trying to have a little more structure – at least for starting points of conversations.
- 8am to 15am: Meet & find seat
- 8:15am to 8:30am: @Desaraev from Twitter will be presenting “Social Media Roll Call”
- 8:30am to 10am: Conversation Topics
- Co-Working (shared office/work space for web/home workers)
- What are you reading? Social Media book recommendations (i.e. Here Comes Everybody, etc…)
- Have you been Plurked yet? Are there too many Twitter wannabe’s?
- Social Media Club (Minneapolis) – Connie Bensen
So, we’ll have another great breakfast – hope to see you there!

This past Saturday (May 10th) I had a chance to facilitate an unconference session with Peter Fleck (@pfhyper on Twitter) at MinneBar on the University of Minnesota campus. While Peter and I hadn’t planned it out long in advance, and we had technical difficulties at the beginning, namely to overhead equipment, it went pretty well.
The part I really enjoyed was the interaction. Peter and I both wanted to start a group discussion, and that’s exactly what happened. There were a lot of great questions from both experienced and new Twitter users, and many people shared their perspectives and ideas on using Twitter. It reinforced the idea that Twitter is just at it’s earliest stages of uptake.
What I really want to do from Saturday is to thank everyone that stopped by and joined the conversation. It was great to meet so many people here in the Minneapolis Web2 scene, and I look forward to talking more with you on Twitter and elsewhere. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have questions or ideas to talk about – you can find me on Twitter as @RickMahn.
Also, since I didn’t grab the names off the board in the room, I’d like to invite anyone who was there to share their Twitter name. Just leave them in the comments and others from the session can find them and connect with you. Any other questions or interest in social web tools that you’d be interested in talking about? It might be worth putting something together if enough people are interested.
