Cabela’s
Well, we spent the better part of the day today at Cabela’s shopping for outdoor gear.
Very cool store if you’re in need of outfitting for practically any outdoor sport. We’re sitting in the cafeteria part as I write this, enjoying a quick snack.
Since this is the last weekend of summer, and Amy has to work both days, we’re out to have some fun picking up things we’ve ment to for some time.
Anyway more later.
New RSS Reader – NewsCopier
CoolSmartPhone.com talks about a free new RSS Reader for Pocket PCs called NewsCopier. With a Smartphone version due to be delivered shortly as well, the vendor, maximumsoft, has a nice product on their hands.
Personally, I use NewsBreak from IliumSoft, and love it. But previous to that I used several freeware products that didn’t reach the mark. This product seems to meet the base needs of the average reader.
Check it out!

Real world EDGE speeds at our new place
So I’ve yet to get the Cable service hooked up yet, and we’ve been using my MDA’s EDGE connection for Internet access. Overall, I’ve been happy with the speeds I get with my EDGE connection, one time peaking at 200kbps – quite fast compared to my old phone’s (Nokia 6600) 40kpbs.
At our new home though, I get about a peak (so far) of around 127kbps, with an upstream of 74kbps. Not too much to brag about, but right in the range that I’ve seen overall for EDGE service from T-Mobile. I can live with this quite well. This is the first real need for this type of connectivity, though I have used my MDA as a modem on many occasions, it was more of a W?BIC.
So I’ve seen the best-case speeds and the average EDGE speeds, and I am happy with the service. I’ve had mobile data service with my phones for at least 3 years, GPRS was a huge improvement over the original 9.6kbps that you could get out of the standard GSM line, and again with EDGE, it is at least a threefold improvement in speed.
Will I upgrade to a UMTS or HSDPA phone when T-Mobile provides service? Yep! The ~400kpbs of UMTS and multi-megabit speeds of HSDPA will be a great experience. Of course, we’ll have to see what the service charges will be, but at the moment, you can’t get a better deal for mobile Internet access than T-Mobile’s unlimited Internet plan ($20 – its called the BlackBerry Internet plan) and for an additional $10, you can add all their WiFi hotspots as well.
Cool stuff – can’t wait for the broadband connection though!
MobileCrunch ยป Nokia Unveils Phone Firmware Updater
According to MobileCrunch, Nokia is finally making it easier for their customers to upgrade the firmware in their phones.
It really makes me laugh, Windows Mobile devices (including phones) have had this capability from day one. Whenever the device OEM developed an enhanced or updated firmware, the customer was able to download and install within hours.
On rare occasions such as an OS upgrade from PPC 2002 to 2003, some OEMs charged a nominal $30 or so for the upgrade, but the option to do this was always there.
In the end its a good thing for Nokia customers, and I can only imagine that they will incorporate this in all future phones/devices in addition to as many shipping products that they can. Good move Nokia.

msmobiles.com – There is no place for Microsoft in the future of mobile phones – according to BBC
HA!
Typical BBC, and msmobiles.com is correct in its analysis of their bias against practically anything American. The left-leaning aspect is disappointing as well (to say the least), but that’s what you get from most any large news organization.
At the same time, I do have to recognize the BBC as a very good world-leader in news gathering, and overall in reporting facts. Something the American press conveniently leaves out most often.
Can’t sleep
Not having a great time trying to get to sleep tonight. Amy and I have been talking of goals and plans for the future, and parts of the discussion have me too excited to sleep.
I’ll be dead tired tomorrow, but I needed to get up and blog a bit. So you may see a few posts here, at TML and at SB. Lots of fun.
Comment Spam
Well, I’ve updated my comment spam monitor to filter a few more spammers that seem to have slipped through.
Its though enough as it is without idiots like these spammers hitting a personal blog. What is there to gain from targeting personal blogs?
Ugh, I guess I should really focus my disappointment towards the real idiots that actually are stupid enough to click on this type of advertising, emails, and blog posts. These people are the real problem because they create an environment where the spammers can make money.
F***ers!
Moved
Well, we’re moved for the most part. All that’s left is some clean- up work that we’ll finish up later this week.
It’s been a tough weekend with a lot of help from family. So without an Internet connection I decided to post from my phone, which can sometimes be a trying experience.
At any rate, we are in our temporary residents until our place is finished being built. Its estimated at about 3 to 4 weeks, and we can hardly wait as we’re kind of living out of suitecases until then.
More later.
