Thoughts and things I care to sharePC World – Frontline: iPhone Shows Need for New Wireless Network
A not-so-interesting complaint relating to the iPhone and AT&T’s EDGE data service. Yes, EDGE is slow for modern browsing tasks. AT&T has 3G and HSDPA networks available in many urban areas that Apple could have taken advantage of, relying on EDGE as a good fall-back in most rural areas. To be honest, most rural areas will actually only have GPRS!
While the analysis of an under-powered wireless infrastructure is true, not just the government is to blame as they try to in this article. The carriers and device manufacturers should also be taken to task on this. Too much emphasis is placed on who has the fastest network, and not enough on making that fast network ubiquitous.
The dirty little secret that consumers need to keep in mind is that the U.S. is a huge country and we expect service in nearly all corners of the map. Take a look at Europe and each country is not much bigger than the state of Wisconsin, or Colorado or California. If that’s all the real estate that you have to worry about, you can get coverage fairly easy. We’ve got a lot more country that has a few dozen people per square mile and that is hard for many carriers to justify putting up expensive cell towers.
At any rate, consumers should start getting more vocal about the price and performance of wireless networks. Popular opinion is the greatest power in the marketplace, regardless of what the carriers, device manufactures, and government regulatory committees believe.
Let ’em all know what you want!

Video Import – New Tools
Since getting started in video blogging, I’ve found I needed something for importing video. While I’ve been meaning to do this for some time, I’ve finally picked up a package to help do this. Pinnacle’s Studio MovieBox Plus is now mine and operational on my Windows Vista laptop. An initial import from the vidcam was pretty strait forward, and the Studio software seems to be pretty good for editing video as well.
It also allows me to use my video camera in place of my web cam if I choose – much better video quality! Another nice aspect is to live-preview on a 3rd display while editing video, green screen (chroma key), and picture-in-picture.
The side-benefit of course, is that I can now also import and burn those home-movies to DVD that I’ve been meaning to do for awhile! Can’t wait to try some things here shortly!

iPhone Launch TV – Mogulus
Yeah, so I get an email this morning announcing Mogulus-hosted coverage of the iPhone launch. So, being interested in Mogulus, I click the link, the page loads and….
![]()
Well Mogulus, here is your first problem. My interest in this link was two-fold, I wanted to see a little bit of the carnage of the Apple iPhone launch, but I was more interested in how your service looks.
Guess what my first impression is!
I mean, I was really interested in the layout, quality, component interaction and so on – of your service, not the iPhone. I’ll get to see clips from the iPhone launch around the globe and around the web, but it’ll still be awhile before I get to see your service, and the first experience with it left me wondering if you’re worth the hype. I already know the iPhone isn’t.

Connect Up – Social Networking
If you are looking to add connections online, don’t hesitate to add me in LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter. Send me a request through the service and I’ll add you to my connections. Not using one of these? Why not? They are one of many ways to help get yourself recognized, allow people to get to know you, and grow your personal brand.

- Darren Rowse of ProBlogger fame makes a good point, and one that most bloggers agree with. Opening links in the existing window rather than a new window is less intrusive and a more intuitive solution to the question.

Sometimes you need to work outside…
There is no other substitute for fresh air and sunshine. The enabler it becomes to allow your brain to race ahead and work on problems is amazing. Why don’t many (any?) companies encourage a trip outside and/or sponsor an opportunity for workers to get away from the office once in awhile? I think it really should be an option. You know, once or twice a week a person should be able to get out to their favorite place with a laptop and wireless data and just work. Turn on some tunes or just listen to the sounds around you – I guarantee that you’ll see an improvement in your world view, and help find an answer to that issue you’re working on.
Another update to Google Docs and Spreadsheets
Bravo to Google for updating Docs & Spreadsheets with a refined interface and a few new features. Now there is a sidebar with folders for organizing and easier visual queues to where your documents are. Another new feature is the ability to sort documents by collaborator. This is a great enhancement for multiple users, where they would like to view documents based on who created or edited them. Finally, an enhanced search feature with auto-complete is included.
Check it out!
