Taking Risks…

Kathy Sierra has a great post called Do Something Scary.  She quotes Eleanor Roosevelt who said “Do one thing every day that scares you”, and continues talking about trying new things (taking risks) and expanding your experiences.  This is something I’ve been trying to do for the last few weeks, and have had a few minor successes (at least in my book), so I’m going to keep tacking new risks, try new things.
The post is a really good read, you should also check out Death by risk-aversion, another post by Kathy.

Custom WordPress Theme

Well I finally decided its time to dig into the WordPress Codex and learn how to create a custom theme. I’ve kind of liked the layout I have here using the Contempt theme designed by Vault9, but I think I need my own design, my own style. The hardest part for me will probably be the graphics as I’m not a graphic designer. Though I think a little assistance from my wife Amy, I’ll be able to muddle through.

This’ll probably take a few days to create and tweak so watch for it in about a week or so.

Checking up on the house…

So we’re off to see what progress is being made on our townhouse since the middle of April.  We’re scheduled to close in August and there is a lot of work to do.  Hopefully there’ll be a bit done, however it’s been raining on & off for the last two weeks (this coming week doesn’t look much better) and may have impacted progress.

As a side note, I’m working on the 8700c review and will try to take some pics of the device at work tomorrow to help round out the piece.  More later!

Yet another MDA review

Michael Oryl over at MobileBurn has posted a review on the MDA.  As per Michael’s usual ‘MO’, his review is quite detailed, and full of great pictures of the device, camera samples, battery testing, etc.  Michael always does a thorough review of the devices he writes about.

Highly recommended if you’re on the fence about buying an MDA (or Cingular 8125 for that matter).

What is a Personal Brand…

Wow… I had not thought much about this previously, and its an interesting concept. Shel Israel posted on this over on the Naked Conversations blog, and it got me thinking (again).

In the post Shel uses several prominent bloggers as examples, (Steve Rubel at Edelman, Robert Scoble at Microsoft) of how blogging has created their own personal brands. And how, through personal brands, the perception of the organizations they associate with are affected.

Scoble, Rubel and a rising number of employees have personal brands that shape global brands. The impact is noticeable now as blogging starts to penetrate large traditional companies. It will be immense in coming years.

He also points out that the concept of personal brands is nothing new. Presidents, sports figures, movie stars, musicians, explorers, etc… have all had personal brands.

Personal brand is not new. When Babe Ruth was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees back in 1918, many fans moved their loyalties from Boston to New York along with him.

The difference is that blogging gives everyone an equal footing in exchanging ideas. He says “… the blogosphere has enormously amplified the number and power of personal brands” and I agree, by providing a inexpensive worldwide inter-linking platform, blogging offers the ability to participate in any conversation. This

What this indicates to me is that each blogger has the opportunity to become what they want. That everyone has a personal brand, that every blogger can direct, shape, and nurture the perception of themselves and the organizations in which they participate.

Powerful stuff this blogging.

Upcoming BlackBerry Review(s)

Since I’m going to be investigating several different BlackBerry devices and the four major mobile providers in the US over the next few weeks, I’m going to do some reviews here on the blog.

The devices I’ll be reviewing will be:

  • BlackBerry 8700c on Cingular
  • BlackBerry 7105t on T-Mobile
  • BlackBerry 7130e on Verizon
  • BlackBerry 7250 on Sprint

So I’ll try and get these reviews up as I work with each model – I’ve got the 8700c for the weekend so if I find the time, that’ll happen soon.

Playing with Cingular 8700c this weekend!

Our BlackBerry project at work is starting to make a little bit of headway on the “fun” meter.  We just got in our first development device – a Cingular BlackBerry 8700c!

Too bad Cingular makes it super-difficult to link to specific devices on their website, so I’ll link to the actual BlackBerry page (here and here) instead.

Three Things

Got tagged with the Three Things Meme by Kent Newsome

For this meme, you should identify three things that you would like to see occur during your lifetime.  It can be anything, anything at all – whether serious or whimsical.  Others have touched on more big-picture items like world peace, ending world hunger, etc… All good noble things.  So here are mine:

1.)    A motorcycle “style” other than the current crotch rockets and copies of Harley Davidson V-twin cruisers (I miss the ’80s Honda Nighthawks)

2.)    Snow year ’round (I’m a winter sports enthusiast)

3.)    An operating system release that actually meets my expectations

So, who to tag next (need to think a little)
