Hi Becky! Great to hear from you. Guess I could say I've been spending more time offline, a little disenchanted with social media this past year. Slowly, I'm checking in on things again. Hope to catch up with you sometime!

Hi Lee!
Long time since we've had a chance to chat, isn't it? Thanks for the links, but the problem is that you're only looking at a single piece of the puzzle. The articles you linked to talk about issues that are continuously dealt with on software more mainstream than Facebook. Microsoft itself has enough malware issues that if they were the young upstarts today, would give any established organization pause to adopt their technologies. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others all address these issues in similar, and in some cases, more proactively than companies like Microsoft and Oracle.

The inconvenient truth is that traditional IT departments continue to dismiss exactly what technology is supposed to do. Make human interaction and communications simpler, easier, and more clear & honest. Simply using the same security scare tactics doesn't work in the larger world, it only works in those organizations that choose to believe the lie.

Cheers!

Social media still has no demonstrable value in business; the only demonstrable value is the lost productivity from office workers spending too much time online.

Thanks Rick. I have got it working after a fashion. I just set my email accounts to IMAP on both TBird and Android and that works OK. A bit slow because they always have to call up the servers but it's acceptable. Disadvantage is that it downloads all the spam which I have to delete manually.

It took a long time to copy and paste contacts into the Google contacts list (which I installed on TBird using the add-on) and that is reasonably OK. The calendar was a puzzle though because, having installed the Google calendar on TBird, and manually transferred existing events to it (again a pain but it's done now), I found that any events created on Android didn't sync with the server or with TBird. Tech support for the phone eventually (after 3 calls) found the solution - when the Google calendar installs on the phone it doesn't disable the default calendar, so any new events are created in that but not in the Google one. The system doesn't warn about this of course, which is a recognised fault. So all that's necessary is to disable the default calendar, and it works. I had to disable the Google default to set alarms for every event - this overrides the TBird setting.

I do get a lot of irritating error messages in TBird which thinks I am offline and can't update data. This I think is just server latency.

I am unable however to crack the problem of tasks - very important for me. There doesn't seem to be any add-on that copes with this. The only possible work-around is to create events that I call tasks, but that isn't at all ideal.

So progress has been made, but there is more needed!

I totally agree. I do a lot of twittering for certain events, and event planning and if twitter is down when I need to schedule an event, it's the most frustrating thing in the world. When i see the Twitter whale it's like instant fury! I have to say, since you have written this post, it's gotten a lot better. Great Blog, keep up the good work.

Les,
The big problem is Google itself. They don't make it easy to use a third party mail client and have everything sync. For MS Outlook, for example, Google created a fantastic Calendar sync tool... but not a Contacts sync tool. One wonders why.

Likewise, for Thunderbird, there are many ways to sync data, but it's not consistent from one tool to another. Your results are not unusual, unfortunately.

For me personally, I took a different route since I wrote this two years ago. I simply gave up using a software email client, and exclusively use Gmail. With Android, this has become the simplest, easiest, most efficient method for dealing with email.

While that works for me, I do understand how many folks may prefer an email client. I don't have any other suggestions to try other than jumping on the Google Groups for Gmail and see what other Gmail users may have for suggestions in using Thunderbird, Outlook, or another email client. There are solutions out there that may help.

While I don't really want to clone all my PIM data to Google, I tried this solution with little success. I installed the Google contacts add-on for TBird, but it creates a new Google contacts folder which then isn't used by TBird to look up entries. I have yet to get this folder to sync with Google. The Google calendar works, but I don't have all my existing data in it and I have no idea of how to copy all the entries from the default calendar (which I want to keep). Then email - I don't want to transfer everything to Gmail, I want to keep my existing addresses. Doesn't everyone want to do this? Maybe I have misunderstood the whole thing, but I have spent hours combing the web for instructions and followed them to the letter, but I just don't get the result I need - which is to keep all my existing stuff on TBird and simply sync it with Android. Just as I used to do with Birdiesync and my old Pocket PC.
