New to Twitter? Top 10 Tips For People

Posted on Aug 7, 2010 in blog, services, social media, twitter

So you’ve done it, you’ve jumped on the Twitter “bandwagon”.  At least, you’ve decided that its now worth your time and you’re ready to reap the rewards, whatever they are. There’s been a lot of discussion in the corporate space for the use of Twitter.  Why you should, why you shouldn’t, and a lot of “mushy middle” discussion around the water cooler that doesn’t really help much. I’ve been there behind the firewall where it’s difficult to get access, or demonstrate value of a service.  So here are some tips on how you really get value for yourself when...

Follow Friday – April 16, 2010 #FF

Posted on Apr 16, 2010 in blog, follow friday, twitter

I’ve been a bit lax the last several weeks in participating in Follow Friday on Twitter.  I always liked the concept and tried to do a couple good ones every Friday.  Over the past year or so (I think it’s closer to two) I found that I kept sharing the same folks.  While these tweeps are excellent to follow – great conversation, smart, helpful – I just felt I was repeating myself over & over again. So last week Chris Brogan blogged about a different tactic to Follow Friday.  Such an obvious one that a person hates to admit they never thought of it (I...

A Note For SPAM Marketers On Twitter

Posted on Mar 21, 2009 in blog, marketing, rant, twitter

It’s been there for awhile, quite awhile really.  I’ve been able to ignore it for the most part, though it is getting a bit old. I’m talking about those MLM types, thinking they can gain some advantage through sheer following numbers on Twitter.  Fancy schemes to gain thousands of new followers in 48 hours or less. What purpose does this serve?  If your tweets/following percentage can’t even break 1%, why are you there?  Why would I even care?  Why are you gaming my account and others?  We can see through what you’re trying to...

50 Uses for Twitter

Posted on Jun 8, 2008 in blog, social media, twitter

Awhile back, I’d started a list of "101 Uses for Twitter", but never seemed to get past 27 for some reason.  Of course, it had been last autumn since I brainstormed on it.  While I don’t think that I personally could come up with 101 uses, I’m sure there are many more than that. So I thought about this again for awhile this morning and did think of 50 uses that I’ve seen or participated in.  So here is a list of 50 uses for Twitter, I’m thinking of more as I write this, so maybe there is a chance at that "101" post...

This Thing Called Twitter – Recap

Posted on May 12, 2008 in blog, social media, twitter

This past Saturday (May 10th) I had a chance to facilitate an unconference session with Peter Fleck (@pfhyper on Twitter) at MinneBar on the University of Minnesota campus.  While Peter and I hadn’t planned it out long in advance, and we had technical difficulties at the beginning, namely to overhead equipment, it went pretty well. The part I really enjoyed was the interaction.  Peter and I both wanted to start a group discussion, and that’s exactly what happened.  There were a lot of great questions from both experienced and new Twitter users, and many people...

Is technology a crutch?

Posted on Apr 27, 2008 in blog, social media, social networks, technology, twitter, web 2.0

It’s something that I’ve been thinking about recently. For how much all these nifty tools have helped us become more productive, I think there is a percentage of creativity or inspiration that we give up. All productivity tools are things that can do harm to our work habits as much as they simplify a task. Maybe it’s that most of these tools are single-task automation or simplification utilities and from that perspective are inefficient solutions. Take a close look at all your “social media” or “Web 2.0” tools and services – I bet most...
