Notes about the G1 as a MID

Posted on Jan 20, 2009 in blog, communication, mobility, opinion

It’s surprising that something as portable as the T-Mobile G1 and powerful a platform as Android can be so useful.  Perhaps it shouldn’t be, but I’ve been using my G1 as a mobile internet device more and more often. The biggest issue as many will point out is power, and the G1 is worse at power consumption and management than any other device.  On the other hand, the abilities simply outweigh the power disadvantages that it has.  Besides, keeping a charger (AC, USB, and auto) at hand eliminates that issue for the most part… minimizes it really. Since...

Windows 7

Posted on Oct 13, 2008 in blog, operating systems, opinion

Yep, Mike Nash announced it today on the Windows Vista blog. The next version of Microsoft Windows will be named: Windows 7 I like it, but then I’ve been accused of being a Microsoft fan-boy, so my opinion probably doesn’t count. It’s a name anyway, and darn early for a Microsoft OS release at that. Not even in beta yet. The idea with Windows 7 is simplicity, and the name seems to fit fairly well. At any rate, I’d like to toss a few ideas regarding W7 (can I coin an acronym this early?) at Microsoft that would make the next version a little bit better than Vista....

Finding A Path

Posted on Oct 11, 2008 in blog, opinion

I’ll warn you up font – this post is pretty much a rant about the blogosphere as it is today. Read on if you want. I think I have it – the reason I’ve been blogging less these last several months. It’s the stress. The stress of debate, of the times, of confrontation. That’s what I think I’ve been seeing develop around the blogosphere the last several months. I’d been thinking it was part of the buildup to the super bowl of political events – the U.S. Presidential election. It’s more than that, however. It’s...

Extra special people make extra special events

So I’m sitting here this fine, cool, wonderful Saturday morning, working on plans for the next four Social Media Breakfast – Twin Cities events thinking. There’s an energy here in the Northland that is hard to describe, but I know our fellow social web enthusiasts know what I’m talking about. Even with the issues in the world-wide economy, I see energy and optimism that is a component of every entrepreneur. The ideas are fresh and honest, the kind that make you say “why didn’t I think of that”? The atmosphere of these events engenders this kind...

Why the sudden interest in Twitter?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 in blog, opinion, social media

I’m curious (and cautious) about the sudden business interest in Twitter. Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe that Twitter is a great tool for businesses to listen to customers, even forge new relationships with them. I’m just curious if it’s due to real acceptance of the concepts of social media, or the more likely scenario of upper-level interest because of buzz in the usual places. Either way given a chance, social media tools such as Twitter can make a difference and prove themselves. The difference is that organizations looking to build relationships through the...

As the IT world turns

Posted on Jul 17, 2008 in blog, opinion

The more time I spend working in the Information Technology field, the more I see opportunities. Usually, it’s simply a an old technology being consumed by a newer one – like traditional telephones being taken over by VoIP phones on the corporate desktop. I’ve championed that notion for nearly a decade, and only now is that really happening at an increasing pace. Cool stuff if you get a chance to use it too. However, that’s not what I see happening right now. It’s much simpler and much more fundamental than another Microsoft Windows server taking on another role...
