@job20
I'd love to suggest some of the training materials and sessions I'm currently developing, but that's not ready yet.

Since there are few real social media training programs, I have a hard time singling out one over the other. A quick Google search will get you several links to start with.

What I really recommend are two things: a change of mindset, and trying things out. What I mean about a change of mindset is that social media is about openness and sharing - a quick read of Cluetrain is a good starting point. Second, don't hesitate to try things out - the current tools & networks like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, LinkedIn, etc... are a good training ground to learn how these tools extend our ability to socialize and network with people online.

I'm happy to answer questions you may have and assist in connecting you with folks if that's what you're looking for. The best way to do this is get on Twitter, and follow me (http://twitter.com/rickmahn).

Thanks,
Rick

I'm currently in the broadcasting industry (on air promotion) and am hoping to find a role in social media. Are there any courses available? ANY training? If not, any suggestions on how to make the leap?

“Finding these people is a challenge in itself, and you may have to look long and hard to find the right mix of skills for your business. The important part is to not be afraid to look inside, as many hidden gems are laying, waiting to be discovered in your backyard. For social media practitioners are in all corners of every business. Sometimes it’s just being able to recognize raw talent, providing time and experimentation, and letting them lead the way.”

Because there really is no college degree about social media, these people do not come with a diploma to certify their skills. But patiently looking and knowing the skill sets that you are looking for will definitely be rewarding.

"The reality is that as many disciplines developed, they were started by folks who really were professionals in another field, but had an interest or passion in something new."

Shifting careers due to a change in interests is not that uncommon. I've known lots of folks who started out as accountants or retail managers but are now graphic artists because they love tinkering with image editing programs.

"Well to be sure, folks who you find in social media are coming from all sorts of backgrounds."

Yes, this it true. Some of the best people enegage in social media are from fields that are far flung from IT.

"The reality is that as many disciplines developed, they were started by folks who really were professionals in another field, but had an interest or passion in something new."

Yes, the secret here is interest or desire, not educational background.

“However, I’ve found that folks from any profession are surfacing as real social media professionals.”

Social media is open-ended which allows you to do pretty much anything that you are capable of. Hence, people from anywhere can succeed in this field.

Interesting thing about internet specialists in any branch is that we can't really check their abilities and education. There is no such possibility for the common browner x user. So any specialist could be just a guy (or a woman) from little town from Alabama who is trying to get some money from his brand new internet connection. There is always that possibility because sometimes someone who isn't expert in particular field can't see that someone else gives him just a large stack of spam advices.
