Where Do Social Media Pros Come From

So where do social media professionals come from? Where does any real professional that really knows there stuff come from? Is there some school that generates these professional people that have experience in so many things, been challenged in multiple ways allowing them to really get the big picture and think about things that most won’t consider? What creates a professional in any industry? How does this come about?

Well to be sure, folks who you find in social media are coming from all sorts of backgrounds. While “traditionally” you’ll find folks from marketing as the most prevalent practitioners. However, I’ve found that folks from any profession are surfacing as real social media professionals. Many never thought about a career transition from what they were doing into marketing, PR, or communications. Many never thought of themselves as writers, broadcasters, teachers, or leaders.

This is what happens in the early phases of any new field. Where did the early “computer geeks” that built out the early I.T. departments made up of micro-computers? They came from accounting, shipping, or it may have even been the boss’s secretary.

The reality is that as many disciplines developed, they were started by folks who really were professionals in another field, but had an interest or passion in something new. Perhaps it was the “new” factor, to be challenged in a new and unexpected direction, learning things that they never thought they’d need to know. To be out on the leading edge and be looked up to because of solving a problem, that could be it too. Sometimes it’s the least expected things that attract people to a job.

Another interesting thing about social media pros is that they have an extensive background. That is, they have multiple skills, developed over time from this job or that opportunity that they’ve followed up on. Whether these skills were intentionally pursued, or unintentionally picked up in some maintenance job, all these skills are what you’re going to look for in a social media professional.

These folks will come with communications skills, writing skills, technical skills, project management skills, and more. They work well under stress, they understand the concerns of the c-suite and legal, yet are able to demonstrate the opportunities for an organization as well as the challenges. They can walk from a technical project status meeting in IT to a creative marketing meeting, and be able to understand and participate with both on equal footing.

Finding these people is a challenge in itself, and you may have to look long and hard to find the right mix of skills for your business. The important part is to not be afraid to look inside, as many hidden gems are laying, waiting to be discovered in your backyard. For social media practitioners are in all corners of every business. Sometimes it’s just being able to recognize raw talent, providing time and experimentation, and letting them lead the way.

I think that a social worker to work is not easy because people are different and not always easy to find a common theme!

Marketers certainly fit the mold for social media, however as you said everyone can be good at it. I think it’s more of a person by person basis, some people are good with the internet and some aren’t. If you are in the latter group, well you won’t have much of a chance at becoming a pro at social media.

    Rick,
I like your thoughts here. IT people came from all over. Factory workers came from the fields. This new and exciting landscape does not have a degree (yet). It seems like people are just jumping in. Bringing what they have. And helping others. Fun times ahead!

    Tim,
I think that much of social media is that it’s new. Getting new folks on board, helping them understand what’s going on and how to leverage the tools. Then getting back to what we did before, or moving on to a new career that social media has provided for us.

I totally agree, fun times ahead.

I agree. The best source of social media practitioners are individuals, regardless of formal training, who take the time to immerse themselves in social media networks. That’s the great thing about Web 2.0–it is a great equalizer that rewards passion and action more than degrees or other more orthodox forms of “education.” The next step is specialization and outsourcing.

I couldn’t scroll down fast enough to keep up with your stream of consciousness, Kat. This is a very enjoyable post!

‘Social Media’ is definitely a buzz word and not fully understood by a lot of businesses, and that’s why I go back to one of the first rules I learned years ago as a sales person:

    Set the Expectation.

When people get hot and bothered about boarding the SocMed Bandwagon, I ask them what they hope to achieve, what their concrete goals are.

Most of the time this puts us at square one. I explain using Twitter won’t make you millions instantly, and the business tells me their story and how they hope to expand and/or speak to an Online audience.

This can be a slow and steady conversation because lots of people/business managers need simple but thorough explanations of how you go about setting up genuine, successful social media strategies — and the ways current employees can participate.

People seem to get it once you frame the discussion using their own personal experience (that’s why listening is so important, especially in the beginning).

Social Media Explorer comment folks – feel free to call BS on anything I just wrote or criticize, agree, expand on my thoughts. I’m interested to know what you think…

As you mention in your comment above, “people seem to get it once you frame the discussion using their own personal experience”, this seems to be the best way to get people to change their opinion of online tools. When the value to their unique niche is demonstrated, then they “get it” and are more likely to come at it with a fresh perspective.

Interesting thing about internet specialists in any branch is that we can’t really check their abilities and education. There is no such possibility for the common browner x user. So any specialist could be just a guy (or a woman) from little town from Alabama who is trying to get some money from his brand new internet connection. There is always that possibility because sometimes someone who isn’t expert in particular field can’t see that someone else gives him just a large stack of spam advices.

Yes, this it true. Some of the best people enegage in social media are from fields that are far flung from IT.

Yes, the secret here is interest or desire, not educational background.

Shifting careers due to a change in interests is not that uncommon. I've known lots of folks who started out as accountants or retail managers but are now graphic artists because they love tinkering with image editing programs.

Because there really is no college degree about social media, these people do not come with a diploma to certify their skills. But patiently looking and knowing the skill sets that you are looking for will definitely be rewarding.

I'm currently in the broadcasting industry (on air promotion) and am hoping to find a role in social media. Are there any courses available? ANY training? If not, any suggestions on how to make the leap?

  • http://rickmahn.com Rick Mahn

    @job20
I'd love to suggest some of the training materials and sessions I'm currently developing, but that's not ready yet.

Since there are few real social media training programs, I have a hard time singling out one over the other. A quick Google search will get you several links to start with.

What I really recommend are two things: a change of mindset, and trying things out. What I mean about a change of mindset is that social media is about openness and sharing – a quick read of Cluetrain is a good starting point. Second, don't hesitate to try things out – the current tools & networks like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, LinkedIn, etc… are a good training ground to learn how these tools extend our ability to socialize and network with people online.

I'm happy to answer questions you may have and assist in connecting you with folks if that's what you're looking for. The best way to do this is get on Twitter, and follow me (http://twitter.com/rickmahn).

    Thanks,
    Rick
