Personal Branding Magazine Issue 7 | Discover Your Brand

Personal Branding Magazine - Volume 2, Issue 3Yep, it’s time for the next issue of the magazine that can change your career: Personal Branding Magazine.  I’m quite proud of the work that I’ve contributed to the magazine, and want to send a personal thank-you to publisher Dan Schawbel for putting together a great magazine in every issue. So please check out the latest issue – I hope you purchase a subscription as a large portion of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Personal Branding Magazine Volume 2, Issue 3 focuses on the first step of the personal branding process, brand discovery.  Many people rush into personal branding, without first taking precious time to discover who they are and what they want to do for the rest of their lives.  In this issue, we expose how to unlock your true potential, unearth your passion, acquire the necessary skills and how to set achievable goals.  We’ve interviewed some of the leading businessmen, such as Marcus Buckingham, to help you with your own personal development.

  • @Gareth, getting a book published is still quite a bit of work, even though it has gotten easier in the last few years.

Blogging and social media is a great tool for promotion of the book, however, because you have the ability to go where the readers are. As an author, you would know what demographic you wrote the book for and you can go and participate in conversations where these folks meet up online.

The great thing is that a blog can be an extension of the book, or a "demo" for the book. It gives the author a platform for sharing snipits, demonstrating their expertise, and getting feedback on specific parts of the book.

The bottom line is that writing and publishing is still a lot of work, but the addition of these tools and building a brand around yourself can help streamline or augment the process significantly.
  • But I think it is different for serious writers who are perhaps trying to promote a book? A lot more difficult I think. They may be able to build a following and sell a copy via their website but they will still need to get published the "old fashioned" way to have a shot at being successful.
  • Tom, you are spot-on in your comment. Blogging is publishing, after all WordPress, TypePad, and the rest are all publishing platforms. SEO does indeed play a large part, and can be managed fairly simply by following proper design and writing rules - along with creative use of keywords within your post.

Even further, the idea that status posting on Facebook and Twitter or FriendFeed is also publishing. Perhaps, not as accepted by "traditional" writers as a blog post, but it's still publishing your intellectual work on the web.

    Thanks for stopping by!
  • Tom
Everytime you make a blog post you are getting published. We can expand that to the area of SEO. When your site appears on google, you have been published. But, you need to be published higher than the rest of the flock, which is the tough part (for any web based campaign). If you are a great writter, then seo is less of a concern, because people will love your writing and link to it. So putting more time into the quality of your work will pay of much better. What do you think Rick?
  • @Michael, @Emma,
Sorry I missed your comments earlier last month. Truly an error on my end.

Personal Branding Magazine is available to anyone world wide via the www.personalbrandingmag.com website, though I think it's only published in English currently (we'll have to work on that).

It is very important in today's market that individuals tell people what they offer, and demonstrate what level of commitment and quality a perspective client or employer can expect. Personal branding offers that opportunity.
  • Erica, getting published is not as hard as you may think. Through the proliferation of blogs and social networking, it's quite easy to share your ideas. Traditional paper-bound publishing is still more difficult because of cost and logistics, but is not out of reach.

I recommend taking a look at the sample version of the magazine that has a few select articles (full length) and see what you think of the personal branding ideas.

    Regards,
    Rick
  • This is an interesting and unique way of marketing, but would it not be more difficult to get established as you need to get published etc?
  • Hi Rick,

This is a great initiative, as far as I'm aware this is the only pure self branding publication out there?

Is this available to the overseas market?

  • I think it's a great idea to have a magazine about this topic as it is definitely something that a lot of people know very little about (including myself).

If you want to brand your person you need to do it right from the start instead of having to first redo any damage that you might have caused while doing it wrong :)
