FeedBurner-Google Migration Complete

This was a frustrating experience, but in the end worked out like it should.  I have to admit that the actual migration by FeedBurner to using my Google account went well, and the existing feeds redirected to the new FeedBurner/Google domain that handles them.

The biggest issues for me were the longer-than-expected reader-count anomaly, and the not-so-exact steps involved to redirect the “MyBrand” URLs to the new feed domain.

Finally, nearly a week after move the feeds over, the reader count is approaching where it used to be.  One or two days eh? HA!

Also, it took a bit of digging to find out the real trick to re-enabling the “MyBrand” configuration for my FeedBurner account.  It after getting DNS changes made, and validating the FeedBurner MyBrand configuration, it turns out that you should also disable the service, then re-enable it.  What’s with that?

Anyway, the feeds are finally redirected correctly, both existing ones that folks were using and the links here on the blog.  Sorry for any strange feed behavior in the last week – I totally didn’t expect it to happen.

  • Hi Rick - thanks for this post. I've gone through the migration and whilst that seemed OK, the MyBrand part is still not working. I tried deactivating and then activating MyBrand but that doesn't seemed to have kicked the new CNAME into life (it's resolving fine via DNS because I put it there 48 hours ago but it returns a 404). Can you remember how long you had to wait after reactivating it before it started working?

Also, on the WP plugin front, it just need to change it to feeds2.feedburner.com/myfeedname right?

    TIA, Mark
  • Mark, time usually is the biggest thing. I think it was day 3 when I went back to FeedBurner and disabled/enabled the MyBrand feature.
  • Rick, your post made me think there was something else I had to do - I wasn't using MyBrand but have the feedburner plugin installed, which needed to be updated.

    It's all so fiddly!

There's a good post on the whole process here by the way, in case anyone else asks you for help

  • Hey, thanks for the link to that post on the process. I'm sure it'll help a number of folks. Sure enough, I had forgotten all about the FeedBurner WordPress plugin you mentioned. Good catch!
  • Mykl, it's not too bad - the worst part was the unset expectations. Everyone has a slightly different outcome, and Google could have described what goes on with the actual migration a bit better.

    Cheers!
  • Joanna, "MyBrand" is the service from FeedBurner that allows you to use something like http://feeds.creativewriting.com/main instead of the http://feeds2.feedburner.com/main.

If you don't use that feature of FeedBurner, then there is nothing to worry about. If you want to use it in the future - I can help answer questions if they come up.
  • I'm dreading this so much! Glad you made it through.

  • Rick, they sure have done a good job of worrying / frustrating everyone.

What's the ref to my brand urls - will I know this if I've done it??!

I'm down 50% of last week's count - hoping the numbers come back!
