That's probably the only concern I have about branding; that you can do it without even thinking. As a teen and young adult, I had no concept of this past the reputation where I worked. But at college and parties and such, a person only worried about how "cool" you seemed that day or night.

I hope that the light bulb of online realities comes on for more young people before they can do something they may regret. While some argue that it'll eventually become a common thing that HR looks for and would find it odd if they don't find an embarrassing moment, I still believe it flavors people's opinions.

Way back in prehistoric times (a little over 2 years ago), I began to realize the value in doing just what you talk about: managing your own online reputation. In fact, it's why I decided to begin blogging, to build a body of work that would represent, you know, ME.

Hopefully this new generation will learn it early before they go too far on Facebook or YouTube... I mean, just like always, it takes a long time to overcome an "uh-oh". *sigh*

Great post Rick.

In order to gain visibility at work, you can build your brand outside of work. People get mislead that it's all about what they do internally, yet, we all know that visibility can come from the outside as well.
