WordPress 2.5 Upgrade

WordPress Well I just upgrade my WordPress install to version 2.5.  Everything seems to be working as intended, so I’m not too worried about it.  After several upgrades, I’ve figured out the best method for me.

  1. Back up the database, and the WP-specific folders
  2. Inventory my plugins and verify that they are compatible with the new version
  3. Disable all those plugins prior to the upgrade
  4. Make sure that the theme is compatible with the new version
  5. Upgrade WordPress
  6. Enable the plugins one at a time, checking their main function to verify that there aren’t any issues
  7. Finally, test the site in all major browsers, which for me means FireFox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera

It’s gone quite well and I think I’ll test one more thing by publishing this post.  That tests the compatibility with Windows Live Writer, my main (and favorite) blogging editor.

Have you upgraded WordPress yet?  If so, any issues? Good luck if you’re just getting around to it! :)

  • Excellent tip there, there’s nothing better than scheduling posts in advance, especailly with news. It’s worth spending a good few hours to write some posts at the start of the month and spread them out throughout the month.

Glad you enjoy WordPress! I'd agree, it's pretty darn easy to keep up to date and tweak to a person's liking. Good luck in your online blogging adventures!
  • Just a few hours ago, I upgraded all my blogs form 2.7 to 2.7.1. 2.7.1 is the latest version till a few hours ago. I had to upgrade all my previous blogs from 2.5 to 2.7 via ftp but I was more than happy to see the link to upgrade it automatically. I think wordpress is the most user friendly CMS i have ever used till the date.

  • Interesting John, I remember reading about that automatic upgrade plugin, but never got around to trying it. Strange that the admin interface had issues uploading pictures - that's something I hadn't tried yet, but will.
  • I used the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin to upgrade to 2.5. I didn't have any issues and the only plugin that did not work after the upgrade was WordPress Automatic Upgrade. There was a new version of the plugin, so it is working now.
I had trouble getting images into 2.5. I kept getting an error that the specified file could not be added. I was using WordPress to create the blog post. I fired up Scribefire and was able to add images with no problems. I have not taken the time to research why it is not working. I will do that sometime in the near future.
