Your first tweet – here’s a tip on how to find it.

I have to immediately thank Dave Delaney (Twitter: @davedelaney) for this tip.  Revealed in his 5,000 tweets and counting post earlier today, he suggests the following to find your first tweet:

  1. Browse to your Twitter profile page
  2. Click on the “Archive” tab
  3. Scroll to the bottom
  4. Click on the “Older” button
  5. Notice that the URL is now something like http://twitter.com/rickmahn?page=2?  Change the “page=2″ to “page=200″
  6. See anything?  Start decreasing that number until you find your first post.
  7. Or, if you’ve been especially productive, you may need to try higher page numbers! ;-)

Mine just happens to be on March 4th, 2007 at 1:13pm (found here) where I tweeted the very informative “Reading RSS feeds” to the world.

So, thank you Dave for that tip, and congratulations on crossing 5,000 tweets.  I had been curious about that first tweet lately because I know I was starting to get close to a full year on Twitter.  Just over a month to go!

  • Sjors - Twitter has been limiting how much history or archive is available the last few months as they've been working on the scaling and reliability issues. Because of this, folks like us who've been on Twitter for a long time won't be able to find their first tweet right now.

I think I remember them talking about some of the things affecting this on the Twitter Blog.
  • For some reason my history only goes back to page 41, which is March 2008. I've been on Twitter a bit longer than that (although I am not sure how long)...

    My memories.... gone?

  • Hey there Voyagerfan5761 It does work well... when Twitter works! As you mention, when they bring up a few more servers, it should help a bit.
  • Wow, I had this exact idea today. I want to find my first tweet for a blog post, but since you posted this Twitter has crippled the paging and limited it to the most recent 10 pages of tweets. Too bad. I'm sure this tip will work again... if (when) Twitter ever gets its act together.
  • Richard, Rick - wow, those have got to be from the early days of Twitter. Neat find.
  • @Richard What about this one? http://twitter.com/jack/statuses/20
  • Is this the first ever tweet though that's still around?

    http://twitter.com/jack/statuses/81

    I think it may be.

http://twitter.com/statuses/show/81.xml is the smallest number that exists as far as I can tell...

    Interesting (ish...)
  • Rick T. - See, I told everyone that you're all smarter than me! That was too obvious - I had to keep doing it the hard way. ;-) Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

    Cheers,
    Rick
  • Um. There are 20 tweets per page. So... divide your total number of tweets by 20 and that will give the page for the "page=" number.
  • Dave, Thanks for stopping by! You're right of course on the topic of feeds - guess I as trying to be a bit sarcastic. ;) I really enjoyed the tip and learning how other people use Twitter as well!

    Regards,
    Rick
  • and by "discovering" I meant "reading" those feeds :-)
  • Thanks for the link love Rick. I appreciate you sharing your first tweet. There's nothing wrong with discovering RSS feeds and sharing that info with the world :-)
Keep tweeting and I'll see you @ 5,000....

    Cheers,
    Dave
