Social Media Breakfast – Minneapolis/St. Paul?

Posted on Jan 11, 2008 in blog, social media

social-media I’m thinking of putting together the first Social Media Breakfast (SMB) in Minneapolis & St. Paul. Who’s interested?

Well, I’m interested in making this happen, but I’d like to know how many would be able to make it. Here are some thoughts and questions – in no order at all.

  • Do people prefer a downtown location or a suburban location?
  • Early morning (7ish) or mid morning (8-10ish)?
  • Is WiFi required?
  • Depending on location, can folks from surrounding areas of the Metro or out-state MN able to make it?
  • Any preference on local MN restaurant, national chain, or traditional meeting space?
  • Suggestions for discussion topics welcome – what do you want to talk about, or learn about?
  • Interested in a speaker? Suggestions?
  • Ideas or suggestions on sponsors? This is not necessary of course, but may be useful to some organizations looking for social media talent and resources.
  • Weekday or weekend?

Well, those are my “random thoughts” on the topic. I’m going to scout some locations to host us, but would like to know the rough interest so I have an idea of size.

UPDATE: If you are interested, simply leave a comment, or if you prefer, email me at rickmahn@gmail.com. ;-)

UPDATE II: Guess I should mention that his is an offshoot of Bryan Person’s Social Media Breakfast – Boston series.  It’s official website is at www.socialmediabreakfast.com.

  1. Hey Rick,
    I am interested.
Here is my answer to the questions I can answer right now.
    1. Downtown or Midway please.
    2. Midmorning if we do it on weekends, otherwise early mornings on weekdays.
    3. WiFi isn’t necessary, but most places I prefer to frequent have it.
    4. If we can swing locations that can allow for our outstate folks, that would be great.
    5. I say lets keep it local. Maybe we can find a bit of hosting love from our local Twin Cities Originals Restaurants. (tcoriginals.com) I have no connections, but I know many of them make great breakfasts.
    6. I’d prefer weekends, but I can swing some weekday too.
    7. No topics or speakers pop into my mind right away. We touched on personal branding through social media at Life Camp, that might be a nice topic.

Thanks for thinking about this. Meetups have been on my mind lately.

  3. Jason,
Thanks for the tips! Especially tcoriginals.com, since I believe in small biz rather than corp. ;) – I didn’t know about that one. More soon.

  5. Sounds like a good time to me. Count me in.

  7. Rick, I’m interested. Somewhat of a social media rookie, but looking to dive in.
I’d prefer something close to downtown – maybe so Mpls.
Early morning works better for me. Some great breakfast spots in So Mpls. Topics I’d like to see covered: successes in corporate blogging; using facebook as an employee comm tool; how to successfully build employee communities in a health care setting.
I’d also be interested if this falls on a weekend. Good idea, Rick. Glad you’re organizing. I may also know at least one other person who might be interested.

  9. Ed – Awesome!
Arik – Also awesome, and thanks for the suggestions – I’ll put them on the list. If you’d like, you can email me those breakfast spot ideas (rickmahn@gmail.com), I’m starting to look for a venue so this is perfect timing. ;)

This also is giving me a better idea of headcount – I’m thinking of preparing for about 12-15. Not sure if we’ll have that many people show up, but I’d like to have enough room in case.
