So I was broadcasting live on blogTV tonight, not doing much but browsing and reading. I happened to strike up a conversation with John Leeke about root beer. Interesting talk, and I wish I had the foresight at the time to record that portion of the broadcast. This is one aspect of personal broadcasting that really brings back the feeling of community. Kind of like sitting on your front porch and talking to neighbors as they walk by.

It is exactly like the front porch–one of those great American architectural features stolen from us during the last half of the 20th century by the television and airconditioning industries. In some neighborhoods, both cyber and real, the social porch is making a comeback. On the practical porch front I recently wrote the “Preserving Historic Wood Porches” (available at you state’s historic preservation office, or at:

On the social side, you may want to visit my own cyber Front Porch:

for a few stories and videos offered up in the old time front porch tradition.

I’m thinking of getting a Nokia N93 phone/video camera for shooting my vlogs (http://www.historichomeworks.com/hhw/video/rftf.htm) and for live video streaming of my workshops and training session.
Any advice?

John,
Thanks for stopping by – I had read a bit on your site and really enjoyed your work. It’s found a place on my favorites list!
As to the Nokia N93, I’ll look into it a bit, but have no experience with that model. I’ve not had a Nokia phone for some time. However, my wife just got a Nokia 5300 Music Express and is delighted with the features and function – I thought the performance was impressive as my last Nokia (a 6600) was a bit of a dog at times.
The N93 (and slimmer N93i) are great camera/video phones that shoot rather good quality photos and video. I just got done looking up the specs on them – impressive. Is AT&T; (Cingular) carrying this phone? The only thing I would be concerned about is that both 850MHz and 1900MHz are supported in the phone.
