Stephen Hawking’s Next Goal: Space Travel

Posted on Nov 30, 2006 in blog, cool

I always love hearing things from Stephen Hawking.  He’s always got an interesting point of view and keeps his descriptions simple for us mere mortals.  His one great wish seems to be experiencing space travel.

The scientist revealed he also wanted to try out space travel himself, albeit by more conventional means.

“I am not afraid of death but I’m in no hurry to die. My next goal is to go into space,” said Hawking.

And referring to the British entrepreneur and Virgin tycoon who has set up a travel agency to take private individuals on space flights from 2008, Hawking said: “Maybe Richard Branson will help me.”

There is quite a bit in the interview with BBC covered by ExtremeTech.

  1. President Reagan made a similar call “to colonize the galaxy.” But rather than a warning of possible extinction, it was an optimistic call to fulfill our “manifest destiny.” He said, “It is only in a universe without limits that we will find a canvas large enough for the vastness of the human imagination.”

  10. Apparently Steve Jobs is also keen to get to space too. Imagine the insurance costs of a flight with Branson, Jobs and Hawkins in it!

  14. space travel is always one of my dreams. I always wanted to become an astronaut but that didn’t happen… hopefully even i didn’t become one, I could still be given a chance to travel on space and see the beauty of the universe.

  22. You would think that Steven Hawkins would already take advantage of Charter Jets let alone thinking about time travel.
